September 30, 2011 -- Fawns have lost their spots; squirrels bury acorns and nuts for winter food. Katydids sing in the trees as snakes begin winter dormancy. Persimmons and bittersweet start to ripen. Black gum, bittersweet and dogwood show fall color. White pelicans congregate at Squaw Creek and Swan Lake National Wildlife refuges through mid-October. Pawpaw fruits ripen in Missouri woods.

"Author Umberto Eco, musing upon the meaning of penmanship, said:
First you have the writing style your teacher drill into you. Then you try to imitate the prevailing style of the times. And finally, you settle into a style that is your own and no one else's.
I cannot think of a more apt description of the painting process."
-- Barbara Nechis, AWS, from her book, Watercolor From the Heart.

1.  Congratulations to Signature member, Laurin McCracken, AWS, NWS, MOWS who won Second Prize in the Keystone National Exhibition. Laurin has a major article in the October/November issue of International Artist magazine, starting on page 82, “Seeing, Drawing and Mastery of the Craft.” In the November issue of the Artist’s Magazine, he wrote the Drawing Board column on page 66, “’Build’ a Better Building.” This is the second of two articles Laurin has written for the magazine about using perspective and painting buildings. He is also included in the article “tools that are tried-and-true” on page 58.

2. Congratulations to MOWS Honor member, Kent Addison. Kent received the First prize award for his watercolor in the Rocky Mountain National Watermedia 2011. The exhibition was on display at The Foothills Art Center, Golden, Colorado.

3.Unfortunately, Laura is continuing to have complications from surgery and has been readmitted to the hospital for further diagnostic tests and IV antibiotics. She is anxious to get back to normal, but at this point we cannot promise the show or magazine will be on time. We will keep you updated.

4. Repeat: Members' Online Holiday Exhibition 2011! This next show is scheduled for October 5, 2011 through January 4, 2012. The deadline is October 1, and the show will be posted on the MOWS site on Oct. 5th. (barring further complications with Laura's health -we will keep you posted). This is strictly a digital show. The rotating slide show on the MOWS homepage is made up of paintings from this show, and there's also a gallery page which links to individual pages of each painting. There will be many viewers looking because of Christmas. If you wish to be in the Members' Online Holiday Exhibition 2011, there is a fee. Please mail $7 per .jpeg image, or $10 per slide or photo to Laura King. 5. The fall edition of our online magazine, Watercolor Studio, will also be put together by Editor Laura King. So, if you are interested in having artists all over the USA and overseas read about your accomplishments, then you need to get them to Laura this week. We'll also list the winners in the National Members' Invitational, all the participating artists, plus our corporate sponsors. Use Laura's email in #3.

6. Here are Papa's recommendations for NATIONAL exhibitions for August: MOWS is an organization of artists involved in the profession of watermedia painting. We have a large membership that covers all of Missouri, plus goes from Alaska to Hawaii to Florida to California. Therefore, we only recommend national and international exhibitions -- or our own! -- dealing with watermedia as part or all of the exhibition. We do not promote crafts nor craft organizations. To earn the MOWS recommendation, shows must be judged by professional artists with national standing, belonging to the American Watercolor Society or National Watercolor Society as signature members.
